The Cakekitchen hails from New Zealand, and from judging by this release, it must be a dismal place to call home. These nine songs sound like rain that never lets up. Incredibly dreary guitar rock with even drearier lyrics. The music falls into the area occupied by Codeine or Galaxie 500, but the Cakekitchen isn’t quite as distinct. The title track says it all: “Nothing seems to change here / Guess I had my doubts / Time is moving in a circle / It just keeps going ‘round.” Keep this away from the easily depressed.
